1600 Pandas
WWF-France is celebrating its 35th anniversary by launching a paper panda campaign across the country. They are parading 1,600 paper giant pandas to create awareness for the endangered species. Giant panda has been the symbol of WWF since it was formed on September 11, 1961. A survey released in 2004 revealed that there are about 1,600 pandas to remain in the wild.
This unique exhibition of giant panda, which happens to be mascot of World Wildlife Fund, began in July 2008 at Paris City hall and has moved across the country. Paper model parade will surely catch attention of citizens and create awareness about the need to protect wildlife across the globe.
WWF has always used wild symbolism to generate funds and create awareness about endangered wildlife. Be it on T-shirts or caps or back packs or stickers, cute black and white giant pandas always demanded attention and support. With this parade they have moved to a larger scale symbolism. This installation/exhibition kind of awareness campaign (maybe first of its kind) is indeed the need of the hour to save environment and bio diversity of our planet. Or soon we’ll only be left with paper models of wild animals.
